We appreciate you taking the time to star on this weeks “Interview of
the week” section on TejanoFM.com. Where fans get to read about the
thoughts and experiences of new tejano artist and the legends of the
industry. A place where fans can learn a bit of biography on their
favorite artist and get some entertaining insides on their careers.
Here’s a series of fun and informative questions we have just for you!
►
Where is your hometown? What’s a good place to eat there?
►
Pasadena/Houston, TX. Is my home town...Good place to eat?? Maaaan.. you got me there. I’m in Denver, CO. right now , and I miss EVERYTHING! I would have to say.. Taqueria del Sol, "The boat" and Connie's or Mambos! But honestly.. right about now I would settle for WHATABUGER! ;)
►
How long have you been in the tejano music industry?
►
I started with Grupo Momento (who then changed to Grupo Eskandalo) back in 1995 through 2001, took a long break due to the passing of my father. I then returned in 2009 and I’m here to stay!
►
Being your from Colorado. When performing from state to state do you see a difference between audiences?
►
Yes, I do see a difference. I think the biggest difference is in the way people dance. I have even noticed a difference, from one city to another in the same state… It’s actually pretty cool.
►
Who are your greatest musical inspirations?
►
I would 1st have to say my parents, brother Rey and sister Ruby. My beautiful mother always sang in church & at home. My Father, my daddy sang a little, played bajo, guitar, bass, keys ect... He always encouraged me, but with that engorgement came… him putting me on the spot!! LOL! I would also say Michael Salgado who is always so respectful and professional great accordionist, La Sombra who was ahead of their time and set a trend, Jay Perez (the VOICE) must I say any more? Shelly Lares, multi talented.. also plays instruments. She has made her mark & held her place. Selena, who of course opened doors… but yet made it a challenge for female artists. I admire everyone’s talent our pioneers and new and upcoming artists! We all have that “something” that makes us, “us” =)
►
In the near future you will be releasing a new CD. What can the fans expect?
►
Being Tejana, (from Texas) I was exposed and experimented with all kinds/types of music. Texas is a big melting pot when it comes to music, so lets just say…I’ll be in the “mix”. ;)
►
How does an artist choose what songs will be included in an album?
►
I don’t know about other artist but speaking for my self…I have to be true to my self, not be a gimmick. I don’t want my CD to have 1 or 2 good songs and the rest “fillers”. I want to make sure that I felt and loved every song I put out.
►
Can you give a piece of advise for an inspiring upcoming tejano artist?
►
Well, what I do… is try to keep my priorities strait.. God, Family, Music.. you will be surprised what you can accomplish. Remain true to yourself and ALWAYS give it your 110%!!
►
Do you still get star struck and if so who makes you feel star struck?
►
I would have to say, yes.. When I first started up with music in 09, I flew in to Houston to work with K1. I have to admit, I was star struck when I first met Alex “Pretty Boy” Ramirez and Roy “Slim” Ramirez (Ex Kumbia Kings) Hey… but I played it off cool. I don’t think they noticed! Lol…
►
What do you foresee in our industry and how will you and your band be part of it?
►
As much as I hate to admit it, unfortunately I do see that our Tejano market slowly dieing. I really hope that we can all come together to help each other. Our promoters, radio stations, Tejano music pioneers and so forth come together with our new and upcoming artists so that we can keep that river flowing for the next generation to come. We sometimes have to accept that Tejano music may have some changes and evolve just like everything else. We can all make a difference, just long as we support each other, hold on to our roots, remember where we come from and do it from the heart! Tejano music can and will remain strong.
►
Are you looking forward to new album releases from other tejano artist?
►
Yesssss! Of course! Its always ecxiting to see when an artist has raised the bar.
